Most schools welcome reliable voluntary help. Regular volunteers can help in lessons with such things as reading and basic maths, being a mentor to older or difficult pupils or offering practical help such as setting out art materials, helping with cooking or even just loading and unloading the staffroom dishwasher. You may have a particular skill or expertise that you can offer on a one-off basis, perhaps to contribute to a lesson on something that you are an expert about! Church members could sign up with a national scheme such as Volunteer Reading Help. Or approach the local school to find out what needs they have. It is always best to find out from the school where help is needed rather than simply rushing in with your own good ideas!
Opportunities for church members to apply for paid support staff vacancies may also arise.
Schools rightly have to be vigilant about the health and safety of their pupils. Visitors are asked to register at reception and volunteers may be asked to wear a badge. Volunteers will need to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. This is not a reflection on church members, but is an essential check to protect children from the small minority of people who abuse positions of trust. The school can arrange this for you.
