Supporting pupils who 'move on'

Changing schools can be a daunting experience. Recent research conducted by Scripture Union confirmed that the move from primary to secondary school can be really stressful. Pupils have to come to terms with moving from being a big fish in a small pond to being a small fish in a huge pond, as the youngest pupils in a much bigger school environment. Other transitions may occur between nursery and 'big school', and after GCSE exams at 16, if pupils need to transfer to another school's sixth form or to an FE or sixth form college. All of these moves can create huge insecurities for pupils.

Churches that have built up good links with their local school are able to offer pastoral support for pupils who are concerned about the change of schools. It's also a good opportunity to hold a special leavers' celebration and present the pupils with a gift. Some churches present pupils with a Bible or with an excellent booklet called 'It's your move', published by Scripture Union, which is packed with useful information and advice.

Church schools that are welcoming pupils in from another school may appreciate the local church supporting that welcome with a gift for the new pupils.
