Voluntary help from church members, Christian schools workers or Christian organisations can be invaluable to a school to provide extra support for pupils in a whole variety of ways. Volunteering is often part of a church community culture as church members seek to follow the example of Jesus and to serve their local community, and that includes pupils in a school. Contact a local church leader to discuss involving church members in this way. Obviously, you will need to make the necessary CRB checks.
In a formal relationship, a church may be able to appoint an ordained or lay person to act as the school chaplain. If they are able to visit the school regularly and build relationships with staff and pupils, a chaplain can be a vital additional member of staff, providing pastoral and counselling support.
Some Christian organisations run very effective provision for excluded pupils.
On an informal volunteer basis, once they have been CRB checked, your school can draw on the expertise and skills of church members to enhance teaching and learning, by contributing to lessons and collective worship, as mentors, as volunteers to help in classrooms and to support extra-curricular activities and 'out-of-hours' provision.
