Gifts of money and grants

Historically the church has been involved in areas of education and setting up and resourcing schools. The church saw a need and did something about it. In some areas there are still such legacies from the past, parochial charities and trusts that offer grants to the needy of the parish. Frequently, the local clergy are the trustees.

Since school budgets are often very tight, any extra sources of income are welcome. Schools don’t always know that these historic local church charities exist. Ask your local church leaders for information about local trust funds and make an application if you have a need which meets the criteria.

In some circumstances, churches can support a school in making an application to a national Christian trust fund for a specific project. One such trust gives grants to community secondary schools for purchasing resources to teach about Christianity.

Biblical teaching encourages generous giving and the local school could be a worthy beneficiary. Some churches make annual gifts to their local school for resources related to teaching Christianity or to support Christian workers and activities in the school. If you have such a need, discuss it with your local church leaders.

You could ask churches to encourage members to collect the various supermarket school vouchers when they are available and donate them to your school. This will enable even small schools to get much-needed computer and sports equipment.

You could also encourage them to establish an annual gift day for education, possibly linked in with Education Sunday. Offer input from your school to Education Sunday, which is usually celebrated in February.
