Has your church considered celebrating Education Sunday, and focusing on schools for just one Sunday in the year?
For well over a hundred years there has been one Sunday in the year designated as Education Sunday (in England and Wales). Traditionally it is held on the ninth Sunday before Easter (but you could choose any Sunday convenient for your church).
Education Sunday is a national day of prayer and celebration for everyone in the world of education. Each year, a theme is devised by an ecumenical steering group representing different Christian denominations and Christian education organisations. They produce materials for churches to use for their Education Sunday events.
Education Sunday is an ideal opportunity to put education on the church agenda. Invite a local school to be involved in the event; they can help lead the service, bring music or drama contributions or simply be invited to attend. It is an ideal opportunity to have a special time of prayer for all those in the congregation who are involved in education - pupils, staff, governors, advisers, volunteers and parents. Invite each group to stand up, and pray for them in turn. You will find that most of your congregation is involved in education in some way!
It is also a good opportunity to have a special offering for education projects or resources.
