How well do you know your congregation? Many church leaders and members would find that an easy question to answer. The quick response would be 'I know them well'.
But in relation to individuals' involvement with schools, and what skills or expertise each can offer to schools, how well do you know your congregation?
Most people in a church congregation have some connection with a school, however tenuous! They may be a parent, pupil, governor, teacher, or employed as school support staff. Or they may already help out with the Parent Association, or as a classroom volunteer.
Individuals in congregations are renowned for 'hiding their light under a bushel'. For many, their lives and interests are intrinsically woven and interconnected and to unravel all the strands could take a very long time. Many are unsure that they have anything of value to offer to a school.
So how can you find out?
Start with a basic questionnaire, called an audit, of your congregation. To help you, there is an example here to give you a good starting point. Of course, you can add or amend as you see fit to suit your circumstances. This will help you know what is already going on in relation to church involvement in the school. It will certainly help you know if you have untapped talent, and it will help you see whether there is a support you can offer to the school.
